Some of you may be a bit too young to have experienced the Metroid series in its prime. Super Metroid was released for NES back in 1994 as the third installment in the series, following the story of previous titles. For those who are new to the acclaimed Metroid series, you can also check out the two prior releases: Metroid I and Metroid II, all of which follow the adventure of Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, and ex-soldier of the Galactic Federation. Beneath that shiny sci-fi armor, called a Power Suit, is a female protagonist and soldier, believe it or not!

On her journey, Samus fights through various missions on the hunt for Space Pirates lead by a pirate called Ridley, while also fighting against parasitic alien organisms - Metroids. 

You might have heard of Samus elsewhere, as she appeared in Super Smash Bros, as well as various comic books.

The game is an action-adventure, and as such, you can expect a ton of fast action and thrill.

The exploration element is also present, as the player can search for various power-ups and unlock particular hidden areas with them. A couple of new concepts were introduced for the time, such as an inventory screen and map, as well as the ability to fire in any direction, leading to very open and multi-dimensional action. 

The graphical interface is a 2D side-scrolling screen, with a limited but colorful pallet. 

As the primary open-world location of the story is on the planet Zebes, you can experience the rocky brown surface, green jungles, blue and sandy water worlds, and a hellish underground area called Norfair.

The action revolves around jumping and shooting, and you get to experience the full potential right from the first minute. Metroid is a bit unusual, as the game starts with a boss fight, and the player is already highly equipped, giving the player a sneak peek of what’s to come on their journey. To rebuild your arsenal and equipment to their former glory, the player must navigate various sections of the map, freely exploring and fighting enemies to gather power-ups. These areas ooze with lonely and roguelike atmosphere, keeping you on your toes at every corner. There’s no dialogue or lore that makes you stop to follow. Instead, the player can form their own perspective of what’s going on from the environment around them. All of this dread is supplemented by a fantastic soundtrack composed of 34 tracks. Cloudy music with strong synthesizer influence and echoes offer a profoundly immersive experience, unparalleled for the time.

There’s a ton of room for speedrunning and playing for a high score. The developers wanted to support speedrunning and included a special ending for players who can manage to beat the game under 3 hours.

The original release was made for SNES, but don’t worry, you don’t need to look for such an old, outdated device. It’s possible to play the game on absolutely any modern device, in fact. You need a so-called Rom file to load the game. A ROM image is a computer file copy of the data from a memory chip, often from a video game cartridge, as well as computer’s firmware, or the mainboard of an arcade game even. The term is frequently used within the context of emulators, whereby older games or firmware are done on Rom copies on modern computers, and using a piece of software known as an emulator they can be run on a computer or any other current device.

First, you’ll need an emulator to run the game on desktop, android, or any other modern device. For desktop, a good emulator to check out is SNES9X.
